Developers pay for very little of infrastructure costs on hillside development - tax payers pay!

The City of Penticton and the public may think that the upfront capital that a developer pays to bring infrastructure for hillside development far from the city centre is a great deal for the city. But what about the long term impact of maintaining infrastructure 5 kms from the City yards? In fact, based on Kelowna's software Infrastructure (MCI) analysis, the charts below show how little of the total costs are paid for by the developer. 70-80 % of the life cycle cost of this infrastructure will be paid by you - the taxpayer! Hillside development is very costly asset management and long term thinking shows building in the urban core or urban centre/downtown is a far more efficient use of tax payer dollars.
